ADOPT A ‘PECORA NERA DI ARBUS’

(BLACK SHEEP OF ARBUS)

BECOME THE GUARDIAN OF A BREED OF SHEEP

The Pecora Nera di Arbus is a breed of sheep native to Sardinia. It has its own particular characteristics in terms of appearance and personality which clearly distinguish it from its close relative, the Sardinian white sheep.

It gets its name both from its colour, it’s completely black including its tongue, as well as from the town of Arbus, an area that has always been very well-suited to the breeding of this kind of sheep.

Over the years, this breed has been at risk of disappearing but its extinction was averted thanks to the determination of some local shepherds, who, like Monica, became the guardians of the Pecora Nera di Arbus.

At the end of the 1990s, there were just a few hundred of these animals, now there are several thousand, mostly found in the large region of Arbus.

Monica is not only the guardian of a breed of sheep, but also of a region and its biodiversity as well as of a community and its thousand-year-old tradition.

By adopting a black sheep, you will become a virtual guardian and your sheep will be easily identifiable thanks to a tag with your name on it which will be attached to its classic leather collar.

Thanks to the updates and information you will receive on a regular basis, you will discover and learn about the traditional rearing and breeding methods of the black sheep of Arbus and over the course of the year, you will follow the entire extraordinary production process, from milking to making cheese and from collecting the wool to its uses in innovative and stylish products.

And remember, you can also come and visit and see for yourself your own little piece of Sardinia (dates to be agreed upon in advance with the producer).

When the time is right, you will receive your products made from milk milked at different times and at different levels of ageing: each product will boast its own individual flavour.

But more importantly, each product will taste even more special to you because of the knowledge you will have gained and the fact that you will have followed the production process every step of the way right from the beginning.
